Open Air Cinema Kamari: A Different Movie Experience in Santorini
I know we are in the middle of winter but still, I cannot help but daydream about the summer days to come. And one of my favorite things to do in the summer is enjoy a movie in an open air cinema. Huge fan!
I do get a lot of strange looks when I mention this to guests visiting Santorini. I don’t know if it is a big thing abroad, but here in Greece it is.
So, open air cinemas: Imagine relaxing under the stars, surrounded by trees, with a cocktail in hand, enjoying a movie. What else do you need? I am perfectly happy with the above. And all these can be found right here in Kamari, Santorini.
Open Air Cinema Kamari (or Cinekamari) is a unique place for entertainment and a very different experience than your usual movie theater. It is actually considered one of the 10 best open air cinemas in the world. You can see for yourself why:
The cinema first opened in 1987 and has since become very popular. Doors open at 20.30 and the movie starts at 21.30. The entrance fee is 8 euros and inside you will find a beautiful bar with where you can buy cocktails and snacks. The bar also sells the locals beers that are a bit hard to find (I know it is funny, but most places on the island do not sell them). Prices for drinks and food are reasonable- which is also hard to find in Santorini.
There is always an intermission half way through the movie, which is a great opportunity to refill your drink and popcorn. Unfortunately, you cannot prebuy tickets, so you will have to wait in line to get one and this is why I would recommend going there early. It is worth the wait. I think the cinema seats around 100 people, so it does fill up very quickly. Seats are comfortable enough- they are directors chairs. The first rows also have a few lounge chairs that are extra comfy, and this is another reason to get there early.
A few things to note before you go:
You will need a jacket as it can get chilly at night. You can also ask the staff for a blanket : )
All movies are in English with Greek subtitles (great chance to practice your Greek).
There are limited parking spaces outside the cinema, so plan to get there early if you want to easily park your car. If you are getting the bus from Fira to the cinema, the stop is right outside it and across the road for the way back. During high season, the last bus from the cinema to Fira leaves around 12.20, so depending on the length of the movie, you might catch it. If you don’t, you will have to call a taxi. There is no taxi rank outside the cinema.
In Greece unfortunately everyone smokes (inside and outside, which is a subject for another day but anyway). If you are a non-smoker like me and you wish to enjoy your night smoke free, then sit on the left side. Up until last summer, that was the non-smoking section. The wind is not our friend here as depending on the direction it blows it can bring all the smoke our way.
The cinema is open from May until mid October (closing date depends on the weather). You can find more details and see what movie is on here.
I have seen a few movies there. And even when the movie itself was not that great, I didn’t mind. It is just so relaxing. Even if you have seen the movie already, go for the experience.
It is a fantastic chilled atmosphere. You shouldn’t miss it!
Did you know?
There is another movie theater in Santorini, in Kamari as well, but not an open air one. It is called Villagio and you will find it in the main square of Kamari Village. That one is open all year round. You can find more information here.
