Santorini Weather Averages

"Will it still be hot in August?"

"How cold does Santorini get in the winter?"

These are questions I get asked a lot lately, so I thought it's time to talk about the weather.

Santorini is in the Mediterranean basin, which means it has Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters.

Santorini has two unique characteristics you need to know about. It gets very windy and very humid. The winds are because there are no mountains on the island and the humidity is because every village on the island is very close to the sea. When you get to Santorini you might hear people talk about the "Meltemia". These are strong winds that usually blow during the summer.

Fear not. They can be quite refreshing!

I have created weather charts with data from 2016. This way you will know what to expect in 2017.

Obviously, in the summer the wind can be good to cool down, whereas in winter it just makes it even colder.

There is a huge difference as to which direction the wind is blowing. Most common winds are west and north-west. The south ones are more rare, but usually stronger.

The first chart displays the wind speed in kilometres per hour. The second one is converted into miles per hour.

If you are a beach person or you are just missing the sunshine wherever you live, then come in the summer.

If you just want to enjoy the views (and avoid the crowds) come in the winter.

Hope that all helps you to plan your holidays!
